Pineapple Trade in Benin

Pineapple is one of Benin's main agricultural exports, and Beninese pineapple is also the first product in the West African country to be certified as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, with locally grown varieties of Cayenne and Sugarloaf. As the fourth-largest exporter of pineapple in Africa, Benin's trade in pineapple with the EU grew nearly six-fold to 400,000-500,000 tons/year between 2000 and 2014. In 2017, the Beninese pineapple exports to the EU were suspended due to excessive pesticide levels. Subsequently, the Benin government managed to solve the problem and resumed exports, and Beninese pineapples regained favor in the EU market. China's General Administration of Customs issued an announcement that from September 5, 2023, fresh pineapple imports from Benin that meet the relevant requirements will be allowed.
